Label Printer Setup and Connectivity FAQs

  • Connectivity and setup

    1) My label printer says Bluetooth is connected, but it won’t print from my phone. What do I do?

If Bluetooth shows as connected but print jobs hang (spinning/loading) or never send:

    • Confirm the printer is added inside the app (e.g., iPrint&Label / relevant Brother app), not just paired in phone Bluetooth.
    • Toggle Bluetooth off/on on your phone, then reconnect to the printer.
    • Close and reopen the app, then try printing again.
    • If the printer can produce an internal test or report, the issue is more likely related to the app or connection rather than the print engine. If the printer does not support internal test prints, try printing from a different device to help determine whether the issue is device- or connection-related.

    2) The wireless light isn’t changing the way I expect. Does that mean it’s not connected?

Not always. Light behaviour can indicate different modes (e.g., Wi-Fi Direct vs connected to a router). If the printer can test print but won’t print from your device/app, check:

    • Whether you’re connected via Wi-Fi Direct or your router Wi-Fi
    • Whether the printer is selected correctly inside the app/editor

    3) How do I connect my printer to my computer via Wi-Fi (using my router/access point)?

High-level flow that resolves many “setup completed but won’t print” cases:

    • Connect the printer to Wi-Fi using the Printer Setting Tool/setup wizard
    • Install the correct Full Driver and Software Package
    • In many cases, the printer driver will be added automatically during installation
    • If it is not added automatically, add the printer manually in your OS:
    • Do a test print from the Brother editor/software to confirm it’s working.

    4) My printer is “connected to Wi-Fi” but it still won’t print. What’s the next step?

    Try these in order:

    • Check printer status: make sure it’s not showing Offline
    • Ensure your computer is on the same Wi-Fi network as the printer
    • Remove/re-add the printer in your operating system’s printer settings
    • Temporarily disable any security software or firewall on your computer to check whether it is blocking communication with the printer
    • If printing via network port, confirm the correct port (see the FAQ on IP address changes below)

    5) My printer keeps going offline on the network. Why does this happen?

A common cause of intermittent network dropouts is the printer being too far from the router or modem, which can affect Wi-Fi signal strength and stability.

    Try the following:

    • Make sure the printer is located within 5 metres of the router or modem where possible
    • Check for any walls, furniture or other obstacles that may be weakening the wireless signal
    • Restart the printer and router/modem to refresh the connection
    • If the issue continues, re-run the wireless setup to reconnect the printer to the network

    6) I’m on Wi-Fi but can’t find the printer during setup. Could it be my network band (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz)?

    Try the following:

    • Confirm the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network
    • Check whether the printer supports 2.4 GHz only and, if so, complete setup on that band
    • Temporarily disable any security software or firewall on your computer or mobile device to see if it is blocking detection
    • Run the setup again after making these checks

    7) Using WPS to connect wirelessly

If you’re trying to connect via WPS:

    • Make sure that WPS is enabled on the modem/router
    • Check the printer’s network/Wi-Fi settings via the printer’s setup utility or web interface (for models that support it)
    • Confirm your computer is on the same network and (commonly) 2.4 GHz
    • If you can’t locate it, use the “connect via access point” setup method instead (often more reliable)

  • USB vs Wi-Fi

    1) My QL-700 says it can’t connect to the internet. How do I fix it?

Models like the Brother QL-700/QL-800/QL-1100 label printer cannot connect directly to the internet. It is a USB-only device designed to connect directly to a Windows PC or Mac.

    What to do:

    • Connect the printer to your computer via USB
    • Install the recommended Brother driver/software package
    • Make sure any special modes (like Editor Lite) are set correctly (see next FAQ).

    2) My printer is connected by USB but won’t print from my software. What should I check first?

Quick checks that resolve common “USB connected but won’t print” cases:

    • Confirm the correct printer is selected in the Brother editor/app
    • Try a test print from the Brother editor (helps isolate OS vs app issues)
    • Check whether any special mode (e.g., Editor Lite) is interfering (turn it off if you’re printing from installed software)
  • Mobile Printing

    1) I can print from my computer, but I can’t print from my phone. Why?

Usually, this happens because the phone and printer are not connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

    Try the following:

    • Check that your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer
    • If the printer is using Wi-Fi Direct, connect your phone to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network instead
    • Open the mobile app, select the correct printer, and try a test print

    2) My phone says the printer is connected, but when I press print I get a connection error.

    Try the following:

    • Restart both the printer and your phone
    • Check your phone’s security and privacy settings and make sure the Brother iPrint&Label app is allowed to access the Local Network
    • “Forget” the printer connection and re-add it in the app
    • Reinstall the Brother mobile app if printing still fails
    • If the printer needs Wi-Fi configuration changes, you may need a Windows or Mac computer to run the wireless setup tool
