Brother Australia Response to Recent Media Coverage on Printer Vulnerabilities
Sydney, July 2025: Brother Australia is aware of the recent media reports highlighting security vulnerabilities in the Web Based Management (WBM) interface of certain printer models across a number of brands. We take these reports seriously and want to assure our customers and partners that the security and privacy of our users remain our top priority.
What happened?
Brother identified certain security vulnerabilities that could potentially allow unauthorised access to printer settings via the WBM interface if the device is connected to unsecured networks. These findings were responsibly disclosed to us, allowing us to take action.
Are Brother customers at risk?
These printer vulnerabilities are not brand or region-specific and could affect any device using the impacted WBM interface. However, we’ve provided firmware updates and detailed mitigation guidance to help customers secure their devices and networks effectively.
What is Brother doing about it?
We’ve released firmware updates for all affected printer models and provided comprehensive security instructions for consumers to follow. We strongly encourage all customers to update their printer firmware immediately using the Brother Firmware Update Tool. In addition to the firmware update Brother has provided, customers should change default administrator passwords, restrict access to trusted devices only and ensure their printers are behind a firewall or secure network.
Has any customer data been compromised?
To date, we’ve found no evidence of these printer security vulnerabilities being exploited or any data breaches occurring. Our proactive approach and ongoing monitoring aim to keep customer data secure. Should any data breach or unauthorised access be detected, Brother Australia will comply with all notification obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
What should customers do now?
- Update printer firmware immediately
- Change all default administrator passwords to a strong, unique password
- Restrict printer access to trusted networks and devices
- Ensure the printers are behind a firewall
- Follow guidance provided on Brother’s official security support page
