Brother Wins WorldStar Award 2025 for Newly Designed Moulded Pulp Packaging

Sydney, Australia  Brother has received the prestigious WorldStar Award 2025 at the WorldStar Global Packaging Awards, hosted by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). This award recognises Brother’s newly developed compact and lightweight moulded pulp cushioning material, reflecting the company’s continued commitment to reducing plastic waste and enhancing the sustainability of its packaging solutions.

This recognition follows the packaging's previous win at the Japan Packaging Contest 2024, which qualified it for the WorldStar Awards - a global competition that has been held since 1970. Packaging is eligible for entry only if it has received an award in a national or regional competition approved by the WPO. This year, the global competition saw a record 550 entries from 40 countries, with 260 receiving WorldStar Awards.

The award-winning moulded pulp was made smaller and lighter while maintaining its cushioning performance, significantly reducing CO2 emissions generated during production and transportation. Additionally, Brother’s unique impact simulation technology reduced the need for physical prototypes, enabling faster and more efficient development.

The moulded pulp packaging, which was first introduced in Australia, has significantly reduced the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and carbon footprint. This initiative has eliminated the equivalent of approximately two Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of EPS, a meaningful step towards a more circular economy. Australian customers have responded positively to this shift, appreciating the environmental benefits of this recyclable, paper-based alternative. This approach has also earned Brother Australia the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines Implementation Award in 2023

“Brother recognised the challenge of reducing EPS pollution as an opportunity to respond to the concerns of our customers and end users and to contribute to the National Packaging Targets,” said Andy Jones, Senior Sustainability Advisor at Brother Australia. "Developing EPS-free packaging, whilst maintaining product protection was the key focus. Receiving a WorldStar Award recognises the collaboration and innovation amongst our teams here in Australia and in Japan. We will continue to collaborate with our parent company to find ways to contribute to a more circular economy and enable our customers to make more sustainable choices."

More details of Brother's moulded pulp development efforts are featured on its SDGs special website, "Brother SDGs STORY," which also includes the video below that highlights the development process using simulation technology and interviews with project members
