FAQs
An overlocker sewing machine trims, stitches and overcasts fabric edges in one step. It uses multiple threads to wrap around the raw edge of fabric, preventing fraying.
Unlike a regular sewing machine, where you would sew the seam and then would need a second row of zig-zag or overcast stitches to stop the fabric fraying, an overlocker can do this quickly and tidily in one go.
While not essential, an overlocker significantly improves seam finishing and efficiency.
It is particularly valuable when sewing knit garments, activewear or stretch fabrics, producing stronger seams with a clean internal finish similar to ready-to-wear garments.
An overlocker machine is ideal for t-shirts and knit tops, activewear, swimwear, children’s clothing, lightweight woven garments and rolled hems on scarves. Overlocking enhances seam durability and finish quality of your garments.
A 3-thread stitch is primarily used for finishing raw edges. A 4-thread stitch adds additional strength, making it suitable for garment construction where durability and stretch are required.
Differential feed adjusts how fabric moves under the presser foot. It prevents stretching or puckering when sewing knit fabrics or lightweight materials, helping maintain smooth seams.
A Coverstitch machine is used to create strong and professional looking hems with stretch-friendly stitching and the convenience of hemming and preventing fraying in one step. Fold your hem then use the Coverstitch machine to stitch your hem with tidy parallel topstitching commonly seen on hems of t-shirts and activewear, at the same time it is overcasting the raw edge, preventing fraying. This would take two steps if using an overlocker and a sewing machine.
If improving seam construction and internal finish is your goal, choose an overlocker. If refining hems and visible stitching is your priority, consider a coverstitch machine.
