The best workhorse in my sewing room
I own 7 sewing machines and the Brother PQ1500 is my absolute favorite!! This machine sews twice as fast a domestic machine and the stitches are always perfect! This does not do any fancy stitches but it can sew through 6 layers of denim or sailcloth. The heavy all metal design will last a long time. I do 100% of my quilt piecing on this machine.

Best Purchase Ever!
New to quilting, and after accumulating many quilt tops which I could not afford to have quilted by a long armer, I began to quilt on my Brother cs6000i. By the time I finished my first quilt (a king size) on it, I knew I needed to make a change, and had started a list of what would make things better: a larger harp space, large table area, a thread cutter, an auto needlle threader, good lighting and compatible with the Brother Dream Frame, which I dream about owning sometime in the future. Most important, it had to fit my budget constraints. My 1500SL has it all, even a knee lift! She was up, ready, and running right out of the box!. No tension issues, threading issues or breaking threads. Yes, the thread cutter cuts short, but it does not interfere with sewing. If you need to see long thread tails, use tweezers to pull bobbin thread up. I have no complaints. If I had a suggestion, it would be to install an idiot light to indicate that the bobbin thread was about to run out. Larger bobbins would be good too! Other than that, this was the best decision I ever made!

Best machine in the house!
As a empty nester dad, with a wife’s that constumes for a local theater, we are constantly in the fabric store, which led to my deciding to make a lap quilt, since I knew I could sew a relatively straight line. Fast forward to 10 quilts later, and competing for time on my wife’s Brother sewing machine, I knew I needed to get one of my own if I were to keep making quilts. I knew I wanted a straight stitch machine, since I didn’t need any fancy stitches with the quilting I was doing. I also knew I wanted a bigger yoke and hefty construction. The Brother PQ1500SL met all of my needs.
The set up was easy! It worked almost perfectly right out of the box, with just minor adjustments to the tension I was straight line quilting together a 65x65” lap quilt I was working on for my mother in law. There was plenty of room in the yoke for the rolled section of quilt, the quilt glided over the needle plate and extension table. This is a huge improvement over both my wife’s and daughter’s brother machines.
I live the added features of the needle threader and thread cutter. I have found them both great additions to the machine. The needle threader has worked flawlessly every time I have threaded the machine. The thread cutter cuts the treads perfectly, so that I’m ready to start stitching after repositioning or starting a new piece. The only times it has been an issue is when I’ve moved the fabric and caught the thread, pulling out of the needle.
The speed control with the foot petal is amazing!! I can stitch extremely slow as I approach corners on my binding, and fly through the straight sections like an Indy Car on the front straight away at the Indy 500.
Now that I’ve used it for two quilts, there are two “upgrades” I wish the PQ1500SL had: a second lamp, and auto back stitch/lock stitch. These two not being present on the machine in no way detract from the machine. I haven’t seen a sewing machine in the stores that have enough lights for my personal preference (which is to light it up like a hometown football stadium on a Friday night). With the conveniently located reverse lever and awesome speed control of of the foot petal, adding a lock stitch or two is easily accomplished without a button to do it automatically.
If you are quilting, or sewing in general and need a work horse of a sewing machine without any specialty stitches, I highly recommend this machine! You can alway pick up a second Brother machine from their Project Run Way series with all the specialty stitches to use on the rare occasion you need them.

I love the PQ1500SL's ease of use and precision. Whether piecing a quilt top, applying the quilt binding, or machine quilting, it does it effortlessly and perfectly. I am just sorry I waited so long to purchase my machine. I use it everyday!
