Sydney, Australia – 18 March 2020: As an organisation that continues to advocate for sustainable development and corporate social responsibility, Brother Industries Ltd are pleased to announce their participation in the United Nations Global Compact.

As a voluntary initiative advocated by the United Nations, the UN Global Compact is a framework that actualises sustainable development for organisations and businesses, through the demonstration of responsible and innovative leadership practices.

“Here at Brother we take corporate social responsibility very seriously and are always looking for new initiatives to implement into our business structure. We’ve seen this in the past with our Brother Global Charter, Brother Earth initiative, as well as several charity appeals, and are now agreeing to a framework that we feel will further shape the way we engage with customers, stakeholders, the environment, and society as a whole.”

In the many decades of Brother’s operation, the organisation has pursued business growth and ways to fulfil their social responsibilities, by adhering to the Brother Global Charter, which has been at the core of all of the company’s activities. This has allowed Brother to build long-lasting relationships and trust not only with stakeholders, but also with customers. It now strives to contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which act as a guideline to major corporations who are interested in running ethical, sustainable businesses. To do this, the organisation has created social values through its business activities as a manufacturer globally, by promoting management practices that are deeply rooted in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors.

By signing the agreement to partake in the UN Global Compact, the Brother Group will comply with the 10 principles below, and further contribute to the sustainable development of our society by spreading awareness to company employees of social issues and implementing initiatives to support social growth.

The 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact

Human Rights

Principle 1:

Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and

Principle 2:

make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour

Principle 3:

Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

Principle 4:

the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;

Principle 5:

the effective abolition of child labour; and

Principle 6:

the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

Principle 7:

Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;

Principle 8:

undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and

Principle 9:

encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-corruption

Principle 10:

Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
