 History

Brother International (Aust) Pty Ltd was established in Australia in 1977 and has now been operating in the Australian market for over 30 years with continuous solid growth. Its parent company Brother Industries, Ltd. was founded in Japan in 1908.

Following are some of our historical milestones:

1908
  • Yasui Sewing Machine Co. is established.
1928
  • Sales of industrial sewing machines start.
  • Brother brand is established.
1932
  • Brother succeeds in mass production of domestic sewing machines.
1934
  • Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. (now Brother Industries, Ltd.) is established in Japan.
1954
  • Brother International Corporation (U.S.A.), the first overseas sales affiliate, is established.
1958
  • Brother International Europe Ltd., is established in the U.K. as Brother's regional headquarters in Europe.
  • Production of domestic sewing machines begins in Ireland.
1961
  • Brother enters the fields of business machines and machine tools
  • The production of portable typewriters begins.
1971
  • Production of the world's first high-speed dot-matrix printer begins.
1977

1979
  • Taiwan Brother Industries, Ltd. starts production of domestic sewing machines.
1980
  • Production of electronic office typewriters begins.
1981
  • Brother starts sponsorship of annual Brother Cup International Invitational Competition of Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics.
1984
  • Brother typewriters are named the first official typewriters for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
1985
  • Brother Industries (U.K.) Ltd. begins production of electronic typewriters.
  • Production of CNC tapping centre begins.
1987
  • Brother enters the communications equipment market.
  • Brother Industries (U.S.A.) Inc. begins production of electronic typewriters.
  • Production of laser printers and fax machines (own engine) begins.
1988
  • Brother Shipping Centre opens in Japan.
  • Production of labeling systems begins.
1989
  • Production of information equipment parts starts at Brother Industries Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia and Brother Industries (Ireland) Ltd.
1990
  • Brother Finance (U.K.) PLC is established.
1991
  • Brother obtains its first ISO 9002 certification.
1992
  • Brother launches on-line Karaoke service for the first time in the industry.
  • Production of inkjet printers begins.
1993
  • Brother starts sponsorship of annual Brother Cup International Young Fashion Designer Contest.
  • Zhuhai Brother Industries, Co, Ltd. begins production of domestic sewing machines in China.
1995
  • Xian Typical Brother Industries, Co, Ltd. starts production of industrial sewing machines in China.
  • Shanghai Smpic Brother Industries, Ltd. begins production of typewriters.
1996
  • Brother acquires its first ISO 14001 certification.
1997
  • Brother becomes an Official Supporter of the International Olympic Committee.
1998
  • Brother starts sponsorship activity of Formula One racing team.
  • Brother International Corporation Tennessee Complex opens as the distribution and warehouse facility for the USA.
1999
  • Brother becomes the first fax machine manufacturer to obtain an approval for the Pan-European communications standard.
  • Brother fax machine production reaches 10 million units.
2002
  • Production of Brother Fax/MFCs reaches 20 million units.
  • First printer manufacturer to achieve the coveted TCO standard, a globally recognised benchmark for excellence in ecology, energy, emissions and ergonomics.
2003
  • Development of the revolutionary Capillary Tube Delivery Ink System for colour inkjet MFCs.
2004
  • Brother marks shipment of 10 millionth Laser Product.
2005
  • Brother Communication Space opens.
  • Brother Participates in the 2005 World Exposition, Aichi, Japan by presenting an exhibition in the Joint Pavilion.
2006
  • Brother develops a new range of inkjet MFCs incorporating 1.5pl (picolitre) ink droplet technology coupled with Innobella™ genuine consumables for high quality prints.
2007
  • Brother launched the most celebrated colour laser printers and MFCs incorporating our own proprietary print engine technology.
2008
  • Brother celebrates its 100th anniversary ’Äì A century of innovation. A brilliant future.
